NextGen: Glassblowing Apprentice Program
NextGen: Glassblowing Apprentice Program provides intensive training for youth ages 16-22 who want to learn the ancient art of manipulating molten glass.
Apprentices work alongside professional glassblowers in the renowned GlassRoots Hot Shop and gain unparalleled hands-on experience.
This course will teach students how to:
- Extract 2,100-degree molten glass from the furnace
- Apply color to glass
- Use molds
- Sculpt glass freehand
- Master glass finishing techniques
Students will mold the glass into utilitarian objects including drinking glasses and plates, and seasonal novelties such as pumpkins, holiday ornaments and flowers.
By working with glass, apprentices will also learn:
- Teamwork
- Problem-solving
- Product design skills
- Creative business entrepreneurship skills
- Sales, marketing, and fulfillment skills
Program Details
This apprenticeship may fulfill an academic service learning or community service requirement. Preference will be given to BIPOC-identifying youth living in Newark. Limited to 8 students per semester. Registration required.

Program Dates: Tuesdays, September 17 – December 17, 2024
Time: 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Deadline: September 10, 2024
Cost: Pay what you can; no one will be turned away if unable to pay.
