Studio Assistant

Reports To: Studio Manager

Location: GlassRoots, Newark, NJ

Position Summary

GlassRoots seeks a highly organized, dependable and proactive Studio Assistant to support the daily operations of our glass art center. The Studio Assistant plays a vital role in maintaining a safe, clean and welcoming environment across all studio areas, including hot glass, flameworking, kilnforming, stained glass, mosaic, coldworking, classrooms, gallery and event spaces.

This position works closely with teaching artists, studio staff, administrative staff, students and visitors to ensure programs, classes, events and studio operations run smoothly.

Key Responsibilities

Studio Operations & Maintenance

• Maintain cleanliness and organization throughout all GlassRoots studios, classrooms, common areas and storage spaces.
• Assist with daily studio opening and closing procedures.
• Assist with or oversee charging of the glass furnaces.
• Load and unload kiln projects and annealers.
• Process student work.
• Clean tools, workstations, equipment and shared studio spaces according to cleaning and safety protocols.
• Support the set-up and breakdown of classes, workshops, events, demonstration and community programs.
• Assist renters and studio users with space and equipment reservations and supplies
• Assist with waste management, recycling and proper disposal of studio materials.

Inventory & Supply Management

• Monitor inventory levels and maintain organized storage systems.
• Track studio materials, tools, equipment and consumable supplies.
• Assist with receiving, organizing and stocking deliveries.
• Notify supervisors of low inventory and equipment maintenance needs.
• Prepare materials and supplies for classes and special projects.

Program & Staff Support

• Provide high-quality instruction as an on-call Teaching Artist when needed, with schedules varying based on program needs.
• Teach assigned classes in designated studio disciplines at on-site and off-site locations; participate in training for unfamiliar disciplines as needed.
• Support Teaching Artists during classes, workshops, camps and public events.
• Prepare classrooms and studio spaces before instruction and after classes.
• Assist with student check-in, attendance tracking and participant support as needed.
• Work collaboratively with administrative staff to support organizational operations and visitor services.
• Help maintain a safe environment by following all studio policies and safety procedures.

Customer Service & Community Engagement

• Greet students, visitors, artists, and community members in a professional and welcoming manner.
• Provide general information about GlassRoots programs and facilities.
• Assist guests during tours, demonstrations, rentals and special events.
• Foster an inclusive and respectful environment for participants of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.

Additional Duties

• Support special projects, exhibitions, public art initiatives and community events.
• Assist with facility organization and improvement projects.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission and operations of GlassRoots.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Interest in arts education, community arts or studio operations preferred.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Comfortable interacting with youth, adults, teaching artists, and community members.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks including bending, standing, carrying materials, and moving equipment.

Willingness to learn studio safety procedures and support multiple glass and art-making disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in a glass art, educational, nonprofit or community-based setting.
• Experience with inventory management, facilities support or customer service.
• Familiarity with glass art processes or studio environments.

Compensation

Compensation is commensurate with experience. Evening and weekend availability are required based on program schedules and events.  This is an hourly position, approximately 30 hours/week and qualifies for full-time benefits which include comprehensive medical coverage, paid time off, paid holidays, life insurance, 401(K) plan, professional development and studio trade time.
